"These officers face unimaginable suffering and they have long roads ahead of them," the Milwaukee Police Association stated in a social media post that was critical of city leadership.
"This senseless act of violence has struck the very heart of our department and our community," the union added. "We have reached a breaking point. Violence in our city is out of control, and those who protect our neighborhoods are increasingly in the crosshairs."
A 22-year-old suspect was apprehended without incident shortly after 2 a.m. Friday. Charges against the suspect are pending, and the incident remains under investigation.
