2 Milwaukee Police Officers Shot, Wounded in Ambush Attack

One Milwaukee police officer is in critical condition and another suffered injuries that aren't considered life-threatening after they were "unexpectedly fired upon" while responding to a weapons call.

Two Milwaukee police officers were shot and wounded—one critically—in an ambush Thursday by a suspect who was captured early Friday.

The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. as the officers were responding to a weapons call, WISN-TV reports. As the officers approached an alley on foot, they were "unexpectedly fired upon" and couldn't return fire after they were struck, according to Assistant Chief Nicole Waldner.

A 32-year-old officer is in critical condition, and a 29-year-old officer sustained injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. The two officers have been with the department for just over six years.

"These officers face unimaginable suffering and they have long roads ahead of them," the Milwaukee Police Association stated in a social media post that was critical of city leadership.

"This senseless act of violence has struck the very heart of our department and our community," the union added. "We have reached a breaking point. Violence in our city is out of control, and those who protect our neighborhoods are increasingly in the crosshairs."

A 22-year-old suspect was apprehended without incident shortly after 2 a.m. Friday. Charges against the suspect are pending, and the incident remains under investigation.
